On 8 May 2018 thousands of students from the University of Zululand KwaDlangezwa main Campus, gathered at the King Bhekuzulu Hall to celebrate their accomplishment during the 2018 University of Zululand Graduation Ceremony.

Sonto Mtolo (DST-NRF Intern), a new addition to the Plant Conservation Unit (PCU) graduated with Merit in Bachelor of Library and Information Science. A total of 4034 students will graduate at the University of Zululand during its May Graduation Ceremonies. “It’s been an absolutely challenging experience but today I am proud to say I made it through with hard work, perseverance and faith”, said Sonto.

In 2016 she conducted a study on the provision of Library and Information services to students with disabilities at the University of Zululand. “It was quite a challenging experience because during the data collection process I had to inform the target population about the study. Certain students felt uncomfortable; they did not like to be made conscious of their disabilities as some do not even consider themselves disabled. During the entire experience I gained a lot of skills and knowledge that have turned me into a better individual”, she said.

Currently, she assists in processing historical photograph collections i.e. scanning, adding information to the images, selection of landscape images for rePhotoSA etc.

The PCU team would like to congratulate Sonto on this wonderful achievement and to pass on good wishes for the future as well.
